Chandigarh, September 13

A local court on Thursday sentenced a 21-year-old youth to 10 years in jail for raping a 14-year-old girl last year. Mahendra, a resident of a labour colony, was found guilty under Section 6 of the POCSO Act and was also fined Rs 1.05 lakh. Of this, Rs 1 lakh will go to the girl as compensation. However, another accused, Sompal (53), was acquitted for want of evidence.

The police case was registered on the basis of a complaint lodged by the father of the victim in which the accused were booked for kidnapping and gang rape. The girl was recovered from the Neelam cinema in August last year and had refused to go to her parents’ house that time.

The prosecution story was that the victim had been sent to stay at her maternal uncle’s house for a few days on August 4, 2017. One day, she had gone to visit a temple with her aunt from where she was kidnapped by two persons and taken to Ambala in a car. She was then taken to Delhi in a bus to the house of Mahendra’s sister. She was then taken to Kashipur where she was raped.
