Arms supplier held

NEW DELHI:The Delhi Police has arrested an arms supplier, Mohit Verma (21), said a police official.

New Delhi, November 13

The Delhi Police has arrested an arms supplier, Mohit Verma (21), said a police official.

The accused was wanted in the Arms Act cases and was carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh from the Delhi Police. The accused has already supplied over 250 pistols in Delhi and adjoining states, he said.

Special cell was tasked to arrest arms dealers, including Verma. An information was received that Verma would come near Kalindi Kunj to meet one of his contacts between 10 pm and 11 pm on Sunday, said DCP PS Kushwah (special cell).

He was asked to surrender, but he whipped out a pistol to evade the arrest. But, the police overpowered him. One semi-automatic pistol of .32 bore, along with five live cartridges, were seized from Verma, he said.

During interrogation, the accused said he has been indulged in arms smuggling for the past four years. He used to procure weapons from Sendhwa (MP) and Munger (Bihar) and he further supplied them in Delhi, UP and Rajasthan, he said.

Verma said his brother-in-law Aakash Patel was working as nursing attendant with an old couple who were in their 90’s and staying in South Delhi. They were financially well-off and were living alone in their house. Patel discussed with Verma and planned to kill both the elderly persons to rob them of cash and jewellery from their house, the DCP said.

Verma procured weapons to execute this plan and he handed over them to Patel. But, the police got the wind of their nefarious plan and arrested Patel in May 2018. Verma became underground to evade arrest. Since then, he has been absconding and changing his hideouts in UP and MP, the DCP added. — TNS
