The Delhi BJP on Sunday urged Lt Governor Anil Baijal to convene a meeting for evolving a policy on cleaning of sewers a day after two persons lost their lives while cleaning of sewage treatment unit at a restaurant in Rajouri Garden in the national capital for which the BJP trained its guns at the AAP government.

The incident occurred when Rakesh Singh Yadav and Ajay Kanojia, housekeeping employees of Pirates of Grill restaurant, were sent to clean the waste plant without any safety gear on Saturday.

The Delhi Jal Board clarified that it was a private establishment and plant was not cleaned by the DJB or its workers.

The BJP, however, blamed the AAP for the incident saying that deaths of sewer cleaning workers continue in Delhi “exposing” the Kejriwal government’s claims of providing sewer cleaning workers with safety kits through high budget publicity in a secvtion of the media and hoardings put across the city.

A spokesperson\I for the Delhi Pollution Control Committee said restaurants with seating capacity of over 100 must have sewage treatment plant and should ensure its cleaning and maintenance.

BJP Delhi spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor expressing concern over the rising instances of fatal accidents involving sewer cleaning workers put the onus on the city government.

Through a letter and a tweet, Kapoor, drew the attention of Baijal towards the repeated mishaps leading to death of sewer cleaners in Delhi and urged him to call a meeting of related city government departments like the DJB, police and health deptartment of civic bodies to evolve a working policy.
