N Delhi civic employees too go on strike

New Delhi, January 10 

A section of North Delhi Municipal Corporation (North MCD) employees went on strike on Tuesday over non-payment of salaries, an employees' union official said.

The escalation of protest action happened even as East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) employees -- despite repeated appeals by the Delhi government -- refused to withdraw their strike they started on Friday.

United Front of MCD Employees general secretary Rajendra Mewati said  that employees joining the protest included sanitation workers, engineers, teachers and gardeners among others.

He said the staff had not received their salaries for the last two to four months.

The government, meanwhile, released details of funds given to North MCD, according to which, it had already released Rs 1,103.91 crore till date during the current financial year.

‘All EDMC workers have ended strike’

A section of sanitation workers continued their strike today, even as EDMC officials claimed that all unions ended the agitation and helped dispose off 2,000 metric ton garbage piled up due to week-long disruption in civic services.

The East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) officials claimed that after a meeting with the Commissioner all the unions ended the strike.

"They will resume their duties from evening itself. It has been decided that their demands, which can be fulfilled immediately, are agreed upon, and those which need consideration will be considered over a fixed period of time," said a senior EDMC official.

NGT notice to Centre, Delhi Govt over strike 

The National Green Tribunal today took authorities to task for sanitation services in east Delhi coming to a standstill and sought the response from the Centre, the Delhi government and recognised workers' union over employees' strike.

A bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar issued notices to the Environment Ministry, the Ministry of Urban Development, the AAP government and sanitation workers' union asking them what steps have been taken to remove waste from the streets and to apprise it of reasons of a deadlock.
