New Delhi, June 21

A nine-year-old boy died after he fell into a pit in a park in Avantika, Rohini, said a police official.

Yesterday Abdul Khalid was playing with his friends in the park when he fell into the pit filled with rainwater, the official said.

His friends got scared and soon left the place. It was only when Khalid's parents quizzed his friends about his whereabouts that they revealed the incident.

The pit, that was nine to ten feet deep, had been dug to dump leaves for decomposition but it was not covered and rainwater had accumulated inside, said a senior police officer.

Almost an hour was lost in tracing Khalid and when he was rushed to a nearby hospital, he was declared brought dead. A case has been registered at the Vijay Vihar Police Station, the official added.

The police said there was no signboard or fencing around the pit indicating that it was an "out-of-bound" or a dangerous area. The police will quiz the caretaker of the park to get more details.
