‘Social media a crucial platform to connect with govt’

MOHALI: The National Youth Summit, ‘EVOKE-2016’, commenced at Chandigarh University here today.

The National Youth Summit, ‘EVOKE-2016’, commenced at Chandigarh University here today.

Speakers at the event included Hamirpur MP and secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India Anurag Thakur, Chandigarh SSP Sukhchain Singh Gill and New York-based fashion designer Sanjana Jon.

Talking on the topic, ‘Social Media Dialogue- The Roadmap from Chaos to Consensus’, Thakur said a majority of social media users was youngsters, around 80 per cent of the total users in question globally.

Through this medium, the youths actually get involved into national interest issues and start sharing their opinion on important issues, giving suggestions and holding discussions. Even success of several vital campaigns, including ‘Swachh Bharat’ can be attributed to this medium, Thakur added.

Citing successful usage of social media by the police to crack criminal cases, Sukhchain Singh Gill said there had been a complete revamping and transparency in the style of working of investigating agencies like police to help general public as now, we (the police) were able to connect directly with our citizens with the help of Facebook, WhatsApp and other social media platforms.

He added that social media also proved helpful in solving several crimes, including online frauds. — TNS
