Girl jumps into Sukhna, rescued

CHANDIGARH: A 16-year-old girl, a student of Class IX, tried to commit suicide by jumping into Sukhna Lake this morning.

A 16-year-old girl, a student of Class IX, tried to commit suicide by jumping into Sukhna Lake this morning.

Sources said the victim was rescued by the personal security officer (PSO) of a Punjab and Haryana High Court Judge. Sources said the girl was a resident of Kishangarh village and was a student of a government school in Mani Majra. The girl’s mother allegedly scolded her for studies yesterday. Today, while her parents were sleeping, the girl left the house and jumped into the lake. Incidentally, her result was declared today. She has passed the Class IX exams.

“The girl reached the extreme end of the lake, which is close to her house, at around 6.30 am and tried to commit suicide,” said a police official. On noticing the girl jump into the lake, the PSO rushed to rescue her. The police were informed about the incident, who reached the spot. The victim was taken to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, where her condition is stated to be stable.

Guriqbal Singh Sidhu, ASP (Central), said, “The girl was rescued and a DDR has been lodged in this connection. The girl was also depressed due to some family problem."

The victim’s mother said, "All parents scold their children for studies, but that doesn’t mean that they should take the extreme step." The girl’s father is an auto-rickshaw driver.
