Rajat Tokas, who will soon be seen in Chandra Nandni, says albeit historical shows have always got the best out of him, he is open to any kind of roles

You have seen him in Dharti Ka Veer Yodha-Prithviraj Chahaun and Dharam Veer. Now, dashing young actor Rajat Tokas is all-excited to play the lead in Ekta Kapoor’s historical show Chandra Nandni. He talks about it and more.

What is the show Chandra Nandni about?

It is a period drama, a show highly based on the unheard aspects of a mighty Indian ruler — Chandragupta Maurya. There is not much mentioned about Chandragupta’s wife Nandni. This show will majorly highlight their story, as the two houses had nothing but hatred for each other.

What made you take up the role of Chandragupta Maurya and how did you prepare for it?

As an actor, I am open to any kind of roles that come my way. Chandragupta Maurya was a larger-than-life person and ruler. So, I took up the role. I have worked on my body, the dialogues and voice modulation. It’s all about portraying human emotions.

How is your bond with Ekta Kapoor?

After Jodha Akbar ended, she told me not to look for work since she wanted me to play Chandragupta in Chandra Nandni. I am glad and thankful that she feels I am capable enough of portraying such intense characters in all the shows she has offered to me so far.

How different is the story of Chandra Nandni?

This isn’t your quintessential love story. Both Chandragupta and Nandni have their own reasons for the immense hatred they have for each other.

Don’t you think that you will be typecast considering this is your third historical show?

No; not at all. It is completely up to the producers. If they think I am suitable and fit the bill for a particular character, my job as an actor is to accept and give it my best shot. Whatever good has come my way, I have accepted it with open arms.

How is your relation with your co-star Shweta Basu Prasad?

She is an extremely talented and professional actress. We share a great rapport, both on-screen and off screen. We are both extremely dedicated to our work.
