To streamline traffic in the city, the police have decided to rope in college and school students to assist its personnel.

These students would be considered as traffic volunteers and the police would provide them appreciation certificates for their contribution.

Talking to mediapersons here today, Superintendent of Police (SP) Jashandeep Singh Randhawa said that traffic chaos in the city was a big problem and it was his priority to provide better traffic system to the residents. The utilisation of youth energy would also fill the gap between the police and the public, he added.

The SP said that cattle smuggling had become another challenge for the police. “We have earmarked the vulnerable routes and identified the villages and gangs involved in the crime in Uttar Pradesh. We are in touch with the UP Police to nab such gangs,” he said.

The Haryana and UP Police would jointly work to curb the menace of cattle smuggling, he added.

About the security arrangements along the UP border in view of the elections in the neighbouring state, the SP said that inter-state nakas would be set up in the border area to stop smuggling of liquor, cattle and narcotics.

The SP said that the police had also identified vulnerable places of drugs and efforts would be made to eradicate the menace in the district. Under a special campaign against the drugs, seminars and marathon would be organised to spread awareness, he said.

He said that an App would be launched to give information about drug peddlers and the name of the informer would be kept secret. A feedback section would be set up at the Mini-Secretariat to monitor the redressal of complaints, the SP said.
