Patiala, July 26

Two days before the beginning of the recruitment process for the posts of constable, the state police today decided to do away with the mandatory dope test for women candidates.

The move followed objections raised by parents. Sources say the police were undecided on how to spare candidates under menstrual cycle or handle those who failed the test. A total of 1.5 lakh female candidates will take part in the recruitment.

IPS Sahota, ADGP (Investigation Bureau), who is the head of the recruitment process, said the decision was taken following field reports that parents of many women candidates were objecting to their daughters being asked to use makeshift public toilets to give urinal samples. “Considering the privacy issues, we have decided to exempt women candidates from dope test,” he said, adding that there was no such relaxation for men candidates.
