Safai worker dies in manhole

Three men who entered a manhole to clean it on Jind road here today fell unconscious. While one of them died, the other two were referred to the PGI but their kin admitted them to a local private nursing home.

Sources said safai karamchari Deepak entered the manhole aroud 10:30 am but did not not come out for some time Another laourer went into the manhole with the help of a rope. He also did not respond for some time. Then another safai karamchari, Monu, entered the manhole to look for his colleagues but he too got stuck inside. A crane was summoned and all three were pulled out of the manhole. As they were were unconscious, they all were rushed to the civil hospital. While Deepak died, the other two were referred to the PGI but their family members took them to a local private hospital .

Deepak’s family has demanded a compensation of Rs 10 lakh, besides registration of a criminal case against the contractor for not take adequate safety measures before sending the victims into the manhole. Civil Lines SHO Ram Chander said the police has registered a case under Section 304, IPC, against contractors Satpal of Padla and Dalsher of Chhot village.
