Greeting MP, MLA mark of respect: Vij

AMBALA: Justifying the directions issued by the state government to its bureaucrats to show respect to MPs and MLAs, Health Minister Anil Vij on Tuesday said as per protocol, the status of MPs and MLAs was above that of Chief Secretary.

Ambala, June 19

Justifying the directions issued by the state government to its bureaucrats to show respect to MPs and MLAs, Health Minister Anil Vij on Tuesday said as per protocol, the status of MPs and MLAs was above that of Chief Secretary.

Speaking to mediapersons, Vij said, “If an elected member goes to a government office, officials should get up and greet the member. Officials greet elected members and there is nothing wrong in it. Some officials do not receive them, due to which the circular has been issued. As a mark of respect, they should get up and welcome the MP or MLA.”

Asked about the reason behind implementation of the directions, he said, “It is not forcible, but is a mark of respect and is required.” Taking a dig at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, he said, “He has failed to get work done from officials. It is the duty of the elected government to get the work done. Kejriwal is relaxing inside an air-conditioned room while people of Delhi are suffering.” — TNS
