Even after four years of having been adopted by Karnal MP Ashwini Chopra, Mohayuddinpur village, situated on the banks of the Yamuna in the Indri segment, has a long way to go to have the basic amenities.

In 2014, Chopra had adopted Mohayuddinpur under the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana and promised the residents all facilities. Struggling hard with problems like illiteracy, addiction to alcoholism and drugs, defecation in the open, the MP and the district administration had made some changes to uplift the village. Now with only a year left for the parliamentary poll, expectations of residents are yet to be fulfilled. Resentment also prevails among many residents over limited visits of the MP to his adopted village.

As per the district administration, Mohayuddinpur ranked among the top 10 villages adopted by the MPs across the country in development.

Amid these claims, poor sewerage facility leading to waterlogged main roads, encroachments, heaps of garbage along roads and broken roads are enough to tell the story of this village. Residents allege that they were hopeful for the transformation of the village, but except for some development works, the village was neglected.

Some residents admitted changes in the village. Ramesh Kumar said when their village was adopted, the residents were hopeful of facilities like that in cities, but their dreams were shattered as they have been witnessing a filthy atmosphere around them. An empty pond was to be developed as a park, but no work was initiated. He alleged the grant was also allotted several months ago.

Ram Singh, the sarpanch of the village, claimed a lot of works had been done by the MP and the administration. He admitted the sewerage facility was being laid in the village and the work of park at the empty pond was stuck. He acknowledged that heaps of garbage were lying at several places and encroachments had been creating a hurdle in development works.

To eradicate illiteracy, adult education was initiated which has resulted in positive changes among residents about development, she added. An awareness campaign was also launched to make people aware about the ill effects of drug addiction and alcoholism.

MP Chopra conducted a meeting of officials two days ago to review the development of the village and directed the officials to provide city-level facilities there.

When the MP was asked about the slow pace of development works in four years, he said he himself used to visit the village to check the development works and if any work was pending, efforts would be made to complete it at the earliest. The grant would also be increased for the village, he added.
