On the back of reports that a majority of marriage palaces in the city are illegal, the MC carried out a survey recently to ascertain the number of such units. The survey findings put the number at 104. But whether or not these are legal is still unclear.

Bhupinder Singh, senior architect, town and planning section, MC, said: “The civic body is finding out the legal status of the 104 marriage palaces. The MC has sought a report from the office of the Joint Commissioner of all three zones — NIT area, Ballabgarh and Old Faridabad. The report is likely to be submitted within a month.”

He further said, “It is suspected that a majority of marriage palaces have not taken permission from the MC. If this is the case, marriage palace owners have evaded tax. Permission from the MC is mandatory for a commercial activity like this.”

DR Bhaskar, Chief Engineer, MC, said: “We are conducting the survey to find out the legal status of marriage palaces. If these are found illegal, action will be taken.”

SK Sharma, district coordinator, Road Safety Organisation, said: “Marriage palaces don’t have a parking facility of their own. So whenever weddings are organised, traffic jams become common on main roads such as the Surajkund road and the NH-2, where about 50 marriage palaces are located.”
