A gang of 10-12 robbers looted cash, mobiles, ornaments and valuables from passengers of the Chandigarh-Patliputra Superfast Express after pulling the chain near the Kalanaur railway station of Yamunanagar district on Friday morning.

Ramesh Kumar, in-charge, RPF post, Jagadhri (Yamunanagar), said the crime was committed when the train was running between the Pansara level crossing and the Kalanaur railway station, situated on the Haryana-UP border at 3.53 am.

He said the miscreants pulled the chain two to three times. They looted three passengers in bogey number B-4, three in A-2 and one passenger in bogie number B-1. “As per preliminary reports, they took away cash, jewellery, 10 mobile sets and other valuables from the passengers,” said Ramesh Kumar.

He added that the robbers also threw stones on the train, but only one person sustained minor injuries in this incident.

Sources said the whole episode lasted about 20 minutes and the number of affected persons could be higher.

The Chandigarh-Patliputra has no stop at the Yamunanagar railway station, but it had to stop there for 19 minutes (from 3.30 am to 3.49 pm), as the Hemkunt Express was running ahead of this train on the route.

Sources said after the incident when the train reached the Saharanpur railway station, the affected passengers went to the GRP station, where a zero FIR was lodged as the incident had taken place in the Yamunanagar district area.

However, on the complaint of Parvesh Kumar Gupta of Zirakpur in Mohali district, the GRP has registered an FIR under Section 380 (theft) of the IPC at the GRP station, Jagadhri.

The complainant said his wife’s valet, having Rs 7,000, ATM card, two mobiles and two Aadhaar cards, were looted by the robbers during travelling between the Jagadhri and Kalanaur railway stations.

Suresh Kumar, in-charge, GRP police station, Yamunanagar, confirmed that the FIR was lodged. As per information, there was no escort in the train from Ambala to Saharanpur.
