Sewage flow near residential area irks Ambala City residents

AMBALA: The alleged discharge of sewage into a nullah, which was constructed to drain out rainwater, has become a matter of distress for residents of Sector-9 in Ambala City.

Ambala, March 17

The alleged discharge of sewage into a nullah, which was constructed to drain out rainwater, has become a matter of distress for residents of Sector-9 in Ambala City.

Adarsh Jain, a resident, said, “Officials of the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) and the Municipal Corporation (MC) are not attending to her genuine problem of air and water pollution.” Temporary pumping station number 5 was built to discharge accumulated rainwater, but HUDA started misusing it by releasing sewage into it and connecting it to the temporary pumping station number 1 built for sewage, she alleged.

The officials concerned were requested to stop discharging sewage into the temporary pumping station number 5, she said.

Jain said a complaint was filed at the CM Window. Later, HUDA admitted that the temporary pumping station number 5 was under the jurisdiction of the MC and it was to take action.

Instead of writing to HUDA to disconnect the temporary pumping station number 1 from the pumping station number 5, the MC uploaded closer report at the CM Window without going into the merit of the case, she alleged.

“We have approached HUDA and MC officials repeatedly, but to no avail. We are finding it difficult to breath in my own house due to air pollution and foul smell of sewage emanating from the pumping station number 5,” she added.

Gagandeep Singh, Joint Commissioner, Ambala Municipal Corporation, said, “According to the complaint, sewage is being discharged into the drain. However, as per the inquiry report of the officials concerned, they did not find any such discharge there.”

In the light of the circumstances, an inter-departmental committee would be constituted and the matter would be re-inquired, he said. Earlier, officials of HUDA and Urban Local Bodies had visited the spot but this time, officials of Public Health Engineering Department would also be included, he said, adding that the complainant would be contacted and the issues would be resolved soon. —TNS
