State to have new administrative map

The state’s administrative map is set to be redrawn with Manohar Lal Khattar government constituting a four-member ministerial panel to recommend restructuring of administrative units forbetter governance.

It will be headed by Om Prakash Dhankar, Agriculture Minister, with Munish Grover, Minister of State for Cooperation, Krishan Kumar Bedi, Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, and Karan Dev Kamboj, Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies, as members. The committee will be assisted by the Financial Commissioner-cum-Additional Chief Secretary, Revenue, and Principal Secretary, Development and Panchayats.

“The committee will examine reorganisation of administrative units like subdivisions, tehsils, sub-tehsils, panchayat samitis and panchayats for better access to citizen services, administrative efficiency, synergy across government levels and better delivery of services,” read a notification issued by Sudhir Rajpal, Principal Secretary, Development and Panchayats.

The committee has been mandated to “make broad principles for determining the reorganisation of these units keeping in mind demographic, administrative, economic, geographical and other relevant factors”.

The committee will suggest a plan for reorganisation of administrative units across the state. It may associate MLAs, especially those concerned, in the discharge of its function. The state has six administrative divisions, 22 districts, 72 subdivisions, 50 sub-tehsils and 6,212 villages panchayats.

Officials said setting up the committee was a part of measures being taken by the government to provide efficient, transparent and more responsive administration.

“The people’s demand for more administrative units and demographic and geographical factors will be taken into account while recommending a recast of existing administrative units,” they said.
