Shimla, January 14

The CPM has lambasted Deputy Commissioner Amit Kashyap’s notification banning rallies and protests near the Secretariat in Chotta Shimla with immediate effect from today.

The party demanded that the DC should take back the notification as it was anti-democratic.

As per the notification, the office had received complaints that rallies caused inconvenience to the public. Only 10-11 persons were allowed to assemble, but the number went beyond 1,000 at times, he stated.

CPM district secretary and former Shimla Mayor Sanjay Chauhan said the DC was acting at the behest of the government and the notification should be withdrawn. Employees, workers, teachers and students would hold protests near the Secretariat.
