KULLU, DECEMBER 12

Kullu Deputy Commissioner Yunus said that repair of bailey bridge at Bhuntar had been completed on schedule and the bridge was thrown open for traffic yesterday.

The bridge linked the Kullu-Manali National Highway and the Bhuntar-Manikaran road.

The concrete bridge was washed away in 1995 floods and most of the traffic to and from Manali was passing through the old bailey bridge as it is the only link for Kullu bypass road.

The narrow passage enabled only one heavy vehicle to pass at a time resulting in the area witnessing frequent traffic jams.

Besides, damage was caused beyond repair by a big truck carrying heavy machinery in 2008.

The residents of Parla Bhuntar were relieved as earlier they had to travel long distance to reach the other side of the Bhuntar town.

The problem of traffic jams in Kullu town would also be reduced as heavy traffic would be diverted through new bailey bridge at Bhuntar.
