Fake notes seized, 2 Punjab residents held

SHIMLA: The Shimla police today seized fake currency worth Rs 1.40 lakh and arrested two persons from Shoghi barrier, about 15 km from here, today.

The Shimla police today seized fake currency worth Rs 1.40 lakh and arrested two persons from Shoghi barrier, about 15 km from here, today.

Two persons namely Daulat Ram and Harnik Singh, both residents of Ferozpur in Punjab, were trying to circulate fake currency of the denomination of Rs 2,000 at a dhabha at Shoghi following which the apprehensive Dhabha owner informed the police.

The police intercepted the duo at Shoghi barrier and during search 70 notes of Rs 2,000 denomination were recovered from them. The police took the currency in custody and approached the bank for ascertaining whether the notes are real or fake.

After the bank authorities confirmed that all the currency was fake, the police registered a case and arrested both of the accused. The duo was on their way from Shimla to Chandigarh.

Preliminary investigations pointed out that both the accused had come to Shimla to use the fake currency. It is yet to be known how much fake currency had been circulated by them. The police also recovered wheat and rice from the vehicle which was possibly bought with the fake currency.

The police are trying to know the origin of the fake currency notes and how much currency has already been circulated in Shimla, said ASP Arjit Sen.
