Shimla, October 14

The mountain solar water heating system, known as hamam, which drastically reduces fuel wood requirement and makes clean energy available to rural households in harsh freezing conditions, is all set to go global.

The solar hamams were developed by Shimla-based NGO Himalayan Research Group. NGO director  Lal Singh said solar hamams would feature in an international conference on promoting innovation in solar energy being organised by Siemenpuu Foundation and the Energy Reform Group of the Finnish Parliament in association with the Solar Innovation Council from October 15 to 18 in Helsinki in Finland.

“It is a great honour that our low-cost solar hamams developed from local material will feature during the conference  in Finland,” he said, adding that they would take 20 solar energy systems there.

He claimed that the solar system saved 40 per cent fuelwood per household per annum and in turn help prevent around 4.90 tonne of carbon emission per household per annum.  “Women will no longer need to spend hours in forests to collect fuelwood, They can now focus on improving their economic condition and health and hygiene,” he added.
