HPU swings into action after Guv sets deadline

SHIMLA: A day after Governor Acharya Devvrat made a surprise check in the hostels of Himachal Pradesh University and pulled up the administration and the Vice- Chancellor Prof RS Chauhan for unclean environment, poor maintenance and loose electrical wires, the university administration today swung into action and directed the officials concerned to repair electrical fittings within 10 days, besides ensuring cleanliness of hostel premises.

A day after Governor Acharya Devvrat made a surprise check in the hostels of Himachal Pradesh University and pulled up the administration and the Vice- Chancellor Prof RS Chauhan for unclean environment, poor maintenance and loose electrical wires, the university administration today swung into action and directed the officials concerned to repair electrical fittings within 10 days, besides ensuring cleanliness of hostel premises.

The acting Vice-Chancellor today called a meeting and issued directions that all necessary works be completed within 10 days and ensured the officiala that financial problems would not come in the way of providing hygienic conditions to the students.

Yesterday, Devvrat made a surprise check in the hostels and pulled up the HP University authorities over the “pathetic condition of hostels and the entire campus”. He directed the acting Vice-Chancellor to clean the hostels and the university campus by October 6 and take strict action against the officers responsible for keeping the university in a poor condition.

The Governor visited Tagore Hostel, Dr YS Parmar Hostel and Shahid Bhagat Singh Hostel. He was aghast to find that there was stench emanating every toilets while rooms, dining halls and kitchens were in unhygienic condition and bad shape.

During an interaction, the hostel students told the Governor that they lodged several complaints with the Wardens, Dean and Vice-Chancellor over the years, but they did nothing. It was shocking that no action was taken despite repeated complaints by the students, the Governor observed. Devvrat asked officiating vice-chancellor Prof Rajender Chauhan and the university administration to ensure cleanliness in the university. He pulled them up and gave them deadline to clean the entire campus at the earliest.

He asked the acting Vice-Chancellor to ensure that the functioning of the university and the facilities should show improvement by October 6 and added that he would be paying surprise visit to the university in future too.
