Challenging the delay caused in taking action against illegal buildings identified by Punjab Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, Mayor Jagdish Raja has sought explanation from Municipal Commissioner Basant Garg.

Raja said the report submitted by Dr Garg proved that the majority of the complaints were received before a few months ago but action on most of the buildings was taken after the minister’s visit.

“I am not satisfied with the report submitted by the MC Commissioner, hence, I have sought reasons from him to explain the delay in taking action in the next 15 days. The minister has sought comprehensive report over the issue,” said Raja.

While the MC received information about a building getting constructed illegally near Burlton Park in April this year, it could only sent a notice to the owner on July 5, days after the visit of the Local Bodies Minister. Also challenging the reopening of Virasat –e-haveli restaurant within a few hours of its sealing to hold a function, the Mayor has asked as to why the building was not sealed again after the function?

He has sought details as to why the building was not sealed even after one year since the first notice was issued to it on February 2 last year followed by another notice on February 8 this year?

He has also sought explanation in cases where the Commissioner claimed that the action for demolition was deferred due to the law and order situation at sites.

“The officials should have sought more police force to handle the situation at the sites rather than bowing down to the pressure by illegal encroachers,” said the Mayor, adding that he had recommended the Punjab Local Bodies Minister to take a lenient view on the illegal buildings used for residential purposes but can take a tough stand against those made purely for commercial purposes.
