Dedicated to the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, Harpreet Singh, aka Vickey Deol, who has a world record of 69 push-ups on two thumbs in one minute, is imparting free self-defence training to school, college going girls across the state to prepare them to face any awkward situation on their own.

Vickey Deol, a resident of Sultanpur Lodhi, has a world record of performing 69 push-ups in one minute on two thumbs. It is registered in the Golden Book of World Records. His name was also registered in the India Book of Records and the Asia Book of Records for performing maximum number of push-ups on thumbs in one minute.

Talking to this correspondent, Vickey said, “ As the world is celebrating the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, and every person is contributing to the celebrations by paying cash or in kind, so he decided to come up with something that benefits people, especially the girls, whom Guru Nanak Dev has termed the epitome of love and respect.”

He said in the self-defence training, the girl students were taught unarmed combat techniques, demonstration and practice of basic punches, kick-defensive and offensive and among other skills.

He said over 2,000 girl students from across 11 schools and colleges that includes Cambridge International School, Phagwara, GD Goenka International School, Jalandhar, IVY World School, Jalandhar, SBRS Gurkul School, Moga, Pyramid College of Business and Technology, Anand Sagar Academy, Bhatinda, St Soldier International College, Jalandhar, LPU, Sant Hira Dass Public School, Kala Singhya, State Public School, Shahkot and DAV DRV Centenary Public School, Phillaur, have been imparted this training.

“Girls should not consider themselves as vulnerable. They should be able to fight for themselves. Girls are not weak. Nobody will help you unless you stand for yourself. So, girls should believe in themselves”, he said adding that it’s high time that steps are taken at an individual-level to safeguard women from anti-social elements and should be trained in self-defence skills.

He further added that such free self-defence training sessions must be conducted in educational institutions or public spots so that women can learn to defend themselves.
