No big agenda for me in present regime: Kohar

Having completed four consecutive terms and become MLA for the fifth time, former Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) minister Ajit Singh Kohar is, perhaps, the most satisfied legislator.

While most MLAs, be it of the ruling party or the Opposition, have their own set of agendas, that is not so with the Shahkot MLA who says, “I have done most works in the constituency during the past 20 years and I do not think much is required.” The MLA also does not have any aspirations of getting a big project for his constituency in this term for he is quite upfront on this, “This will be the tenure of the Congress government and we, being Akalis, should not expect much. It is better not to have any big dreams for the next five years.”

Widening of roads

The biggest project coming up for the residents of the area is the Jalandhar-Nakodar-Shahkot-Barnala road, which is currently being four-laned. “Several other 18-foot roads are coming up fast such as those from Punia to Shahkot, Malliwal to Kalaran, Rupewal to Talwandi Madho and Mehalpur to Rajowal Gorsian.”

Even as the sewage work of Shahkot town is nearing completion and a sewage treatment plant is coming up at a cost of Rs 11 crore, Kohar says he has to get the same work done for Lohian and Mehatpur too.

Dearth of school staff

Kohar says that one problem that he is facing is dearth of staff in government schools. “Falling far from the city, not many teachers are ready to move to schools of Shahkot constituency. We are looking for ways and means to check it,” he said.

On the DTO’s charge going with the SDM, Kohar said, “Let it happen. It is a simple communication as of now. Only after it gets implemented, will we be able to see if it is workable or not.”

Banking on Capt’s promises

Claiming to have done most of his job, Kohar says most people of his constituency were now looking forwards towards the promises made by the new CM Capt Amarinder Singh. “While the youth are waiting for mobile phones and employment opportunities, the farmers are awaiting their loan waivers. And my job is to tell the people that Capt is a very reliable man. If hecontinued on page 2
