Sanitation union threatens stir

The sanitation workers union of the Municipal Corporation (MC) today threatened to go on an indefinite strike if their demands were not met before May 2. Today, in the absence of senior officials at the MC office, the union members pasted copies of memorandum on their office doors.

Union president Chandan Grewal said though a resolution had already been passed in the general house, the civic body was yet to recruit 535 sanitation workers on an urgent basis. Also, he demanded that the civic body was yet to regularise the jobs of 301 gardeners. Also, taking up the issue of chassis scam, the union, while extending its support to suspended officer Sanjeev Kalia, asked who had deputed Sushil Rana as purchase officer for the chassis and why no action was taken on despite the scam coming out in the open. The union further demanded that with the increase of wards from 60 to 75, the civic body should also recruit 2,000 sanitation workers and 500 sewermen on an urgent basis. — TNS
