27 farmers get tips on organic farming

LUDHIANA: Punjab Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (PAMETI) organised a three-day training programme on “Organic Farming for Soil and Water Conservation”, which concluded on Thursday.

Punjab Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (PAMETI) organised a three-day training programme on “Organic Farming for Soil and Water Conservation”, which concluded on Thursday.

It was for the benefit of farmers from various districts of Punjab under Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojna in which 27 farmers participated.

During the introductory session, Dr H S Dhaliwal, Director PAMETI, explained the objective of the programme.

He stressed there was a need for state farmers to understand the role of organic farming for conservation of water quality and soil health.

Awareness about principles, prospects, standards and certification regarding organic farming was created among the participants by Dr C S Aulakh, Director, School of Organic Farming, PAU.

Ways to identify and reduce residual effects of pesticides and use of bio control agents for insect pest management in crops was practically demonstrated by various experts from Department of Entomology, PAU, to the trainees.

Trainees were imparted knowledge about improving water use efficiency and soil health. Post Harvest Management of organic produce, their packaging, labeling and marketing were also discussed during the programme.

Dr PP Sahota, Senior Microbiologist, Department of Microbiology, PAU, took a session on bio-fertilisers in organic farming and also awarded training certificates to the farmers.

Trainees appreciated the efforts made by PAMETI faculty and staff and vowed to apply the knowledge learnt from the training in their fields not only to get better income but also for sustainable production in an eco-friendly pollution free environment.
