In a suspected case of celebratory firing gone wrong, a boy hailing from Kurukshetra in Haryana suffered a bullet injury in his stomach during the wedding function of his cousin at his relative’s house in Janta Nagar, Shimlapuri.

The victim, Jagwinder, is undergoing treatment at Dayanand Medical College & Hospital where his condition was stated to be stable.

The incident occurred around 7 pm on February 15 and it has been a blind case so far for the police as the victim claimed he failed to notice from which direction the bullet came and who fired it. No other person attending the function has come forward either with any complaint. The police, as such, are finding it tough to trace the weapon used for the firing.

The police said the victim narrated that he suddenly felt something had hit his stomach and when he checked out, he was shocked  to see blood oozing from the wound. Jagwinder’s relatives rushed him to the hospital where doctors told them the boy had been hit by a bullet.

The Shimlapuri Station House Officer said nobody had lodged a complaint yet. “We got to know about the incident from the hospital. When we reached out to the victim to record his statement, he did not name any suspect being involved in celebratory firing. We have registered a DDR and a probe is on,” the SHO said.

Local leader’s kin to blame?

  • Rumours are rife that a close relative of some local leader resorted to celebratory firing during the wedding, which injured the boy
  • After the incident, a message was doing the rounds on the social media that the relative fired from the licensed weapon of the leader
  • However, there has been no confirmation from the police on this yet
  • Despite directions by the Police Commissioner against it, celebratory firing has been common in the city during weddings and other functions
