Ludhiana, June 20

Ahead of International Day of Yoga on June 21, the sale of yoga mats and T-shirts has gone up in the city. While yoga enthusiasts are buying yoga mats and T-shirts to mark the day, some others are purchasing these to add a little zing to their mornings.

Garment and handloom shops are making most of this yoga fervour and making a quick buck by selling yoga mats and T-shirts specially made for the day. T-shirts with the picture of Gautam Buddha meditating under a tree or with slogans such as, “I love Yoga”, “I do Yoga to relieve stress”, and “Keep Calm and do Yoga” have become a hit among city people.

Shakti Kumar Sharma from Sportking, Mall Road, said a large number of people were coming to their showroom to buy T-shirts and they had sold around 70 such T-shirts in a day. “The cost of a T-shirt is around Rs 600 but on the occasion of Yoga Day, we are selling it for 299. We want to spread the message of goodness and wealth, so we have slashed the prices of the T-shirts,” he said.

Kulwinder Singh, a handloom shop owner at Ghumar Mandi, said on an average, he sold 20 or 25 yoga mats in a week as summer vacations are on and a large number of children and women had joined yoga classes. But in the past two days, he had sold nearly 50 yoga mats.

“The city people are all geared up for the day as all fitness clubs, social organisations and ladies’ club are celebrating the day tomorrow,” he said.

Meanwhile, not only the retail market but also the online market is getting a good response ahead of Yoga Day. “I wanted a yoga mat with a message printed on it but could not find one in the market. I searched the Internet and was lucky enough to find a beautiful mat with an inspiring message written on it. My yoga mat reads “Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self to the self,” says a visibly elated Vinni Singh, a city resident.
