A sequel too ordinary

A still from Pacific Rim: Uprising

Johnson Thomas

This sequel to Guillermo del Toro's monsters-versus-biomechanical warriors saga, is visually okay. The scaling is fine too but the action is all jumbled up and the story-telling is entirely flat.

The nomenclature used throughout the film is confusing but the good versus evil backbone is entirely steely. This sequel in fact brings nothing new to the table. Characters may have lost their way over time but eventually they come good. The film apes Transformers to such an extent that you forget that they were radically different to begin with.

Without Del Toro to give the story more meat, direction and craft, there’s little to engage. Knight is more of a handyman. There’s nothing distinctive about his assemblage. Everything in this sequel be it the elements, the characters, the names, the action, etc. seems outlandish. This unnecessary extension of Del Toro’s lovingly imaginative and detailed fantasy universe fails to even live up to the expectations arisen from the first instalment. The actors do their job but it’s all so forgettable that you could just walk out of the movie wondering whether you were watching a movie or playing a video-game. Truly ordinary if you ask me!
