The Congress on Wednesday calibrated its stand on Jammu & Kashmir, attacking both BJP and PDP for the current turmoil in the state by saying the collapse of the opportunistic alliance was a huge relief.

The Congress questioned the BJP and Mehbooba Mufti-led PDP for joining hands for “greed” after having attacked one another viciously in the 2014 state elections.

“The BJP told Jammu to vote for its candidates and the PDP asked its constituency in Kashmir tk back it. Both abused one another and then came together. This was the unholiest alliance,” Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said on Wednesday.

The statement came after the Congress core group on JK met under the chairmanship of former prime minister Manmohan Singh.

The Congress also decided not to press for fresh elections in the state and instead put the onus on Centre to restore law and order in the state for elections to be held.

“We want elections but do not want a situation of 7 per cent voting,” said Azad.

The core group posed seven questions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi including how he proposed to prevent radicalisation of state youth and by when will be restore normalcy.

J&K Congress chief GA Mir said the party hoped Governor’s Rule would help restore trust and normalcy in the state.
