In a rare medical case, a team of gynaecologists and urologists have removed a small uterus and fallopian tube, female reproductive organs, from a 22-year-old man at a private hospital in Udaipur.

There have only been about 400 cases of Persistent Mullerian Duct Syndrome (PMDS), including this one in the world, claims Dr Shilpa Goyal, senior gynaecologist consultant at GBH American Hospital in Udaipur.

PMDS is a rare disorder of sexual development that affects males, though males have normal reproductive organs and normal external genitalia but also have uterus and fallopian tubes in the rudimentary form, Dr Goyal told The Tribune.

This is found in males in the age group of 8 months to 27 years, she said.

The patient had come to consult a urologist for his testes related problem, and during an MRI scan the congenital disease was detected, she said.

Urologist Manish Bhatt has removed the non-functional testes also, she said.
