Sangrur, June 28

Truckers held a protest in front of Sangrur and Barnala Deputy Commissioners’ offices on Wednesday against the state government’s recent move to disband their unions.

They raised slogans against the Punjab Government and announced to launch an indefinite protest if the government failed to take back its decision.

“Lakhs of families are dependent on the transport business in the state. The government should have considered how we would earn our livelihood,” said Ranjit singh, a local trucker while protesting in front of the Sangrur DC office.

Truck operators of Faridkot, Jaitu, Kotkapura and Sadiq towns of the Faridkot district submitted a joint memorandum to the Faridkot SDM on Wednesday.

Criticising the state government’s decision of disbanding all truck unions, the trucks claimed that the allegations of them harassing the commission agents and farmers were false.

Disbanding the truck unions would lead to chaos in the transportation and the shifting of wheat and paddy crops in the coming season, the truck operators stated in the memorandum.
