NEW DELHI: Sasi Kumar Mukund got the better of Chinese wonderkid Yibing Wu but Prajnesh Gunneswaran suffered a shock first-round defeat at the ATP Challenger tournament in Shenzen, China.

Sasi Kumar Mukund got the better of Chinese wonderkid Yibing Wu but Prajnesh Gunneswaran suffered a shock first-round defeat at the ATP Challenger tournament in Shenzen, China. The 21-year-old Sasi defeated Wu 7-6 (4) 6-2 in one hour and 20 minutes to move into the second round of the $75,000 event on Monday. Wu had won the junior US Open last year and became the junior world No. 1 after his Grand Slam win. Fourth seed Gunneswaran, however, lost 3-6 4-6 to Alejandro Davidovick Fokina from Spain.  In the battle of the Indians, third seed Ramkumar Ramanathan fought off qualifier Sumit Nagal 3-6 6-4 7-6(2) in his opening round. Meanwhile, Saketh Myneni conceded his first-round contest against Frenchman Johan Tatlot due to foot blisters.

Boxing Nationals: Mandeep, Satish enter quarters  

Former Commonwealth Games silver medallist Mandeep Jangra (69kg) notched up a knockout win to enter the quarterfinals in the senior men’s National Boxing Championships here on Tuesday.  Jangra, representing Haryana, knocked out All India Police’s Pawan Kumar in the second round of his pre-quarterfinal bout to enter the last-eight stage. Commonwealth Games silver winner and this year’s Arjuna awardee Satish Kumar (+91kg), who is competing for the Services Sports Control Board, also made it to the quarters after outclassing Madhya Pradesh’s Monish Qureshi in the opening three minutes of his bout.  Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Naman Tanwar (91kg) eased into the quarters by outpunching Karnataka’s Nagesh.
