An Unpopular Tax in Multan

WE desire to correct an error which crept in to the paragraph under the above heading which appeared in our issue of the 18th instant. The criminal proceedings taken against a leading businessman of the town, we are informed, did not proceed to the end but the case against all the accused was adjourned sine die by the district magistrate. We many also mention incidentally that although the representation of the shopkeepers backed by most of the municipal commissioners was submitted to Major Coldstream that officer had made over charge to Mr. Worsley before the matter came up before the municipal committee. We express the hope that the resolution passed by the committee by an overwhelming majority under the presidency of Mr. Worsley will receive his early and favourable consideration and that no time will be lost in obtaining the requisite sanction so that a standing source of irritation may be a thing of the past.
