US Administration seeks $385m. assistance for India

WASHINGTON, July 10 (Reuter)—The Nixon Administration made a strong plea to congress yesterday to increase economic aid to India, Pakistan and Turkey, saying that cuts now would delay the day can stand on their own feet without assistance. Mr. Maurice J. Williams, head of the Agency for International Development’s Bureau for Near East and South Asia, told a Congressional Committee that 96 per cent of $81 million in proposed development loans in the area were earmarked for these three countries in the 1970 financial year. The funds, part of President Nixon’s overall foreign and programme for 1970, are to be shared as follows: $385 million for India; $140 million for Pakistan; $10 million for Turkey; $3 million for Ceylon; and $1 million for Afghanistan.
