Though passenger traffic at major airports in North is yet to return to the pre-Covid level, Leh airport has achieved 18% growth in passenger traffic during April-September (FY22) as compared to same period in FY20. Also, during the same period (April-September 2021), it witnessed over 726% growth in traffic as compared to corresponding period in 2020-21.
The growth in traffic at Leh is attributed to substantial increase in tourist inflow.
According to Airports Authority of India data, during April-September (FY22), 5.83 lakh passengers transited through the Leh as compared to 4.96 lakh during the corresponding period in FY20.
According to rating agency ICRA, the domestic air passenger traffic is likely to return to the pre-Covid level by financial year 2022-23 and international by 2023-24. The domestic recovery is hampered by sluggish demand from leisure and business travel.
The domestic passenger traffic at Chandigarh, Amritsar, and Srinagar International Airport declined by 26%, 59% and 17%, respectively, during April-September (FY22) as compared to April-September (FY20).
