Chandigarh, July 11

Heavy rain spelt chaos for city residents as many sectors faced power cuts for hours.

Among the worst-affected areas were Maloya, Burail and Mauli Jagran where thousands of people faced power cuts ranging from eight to 10 hours

The power cuts were caused by snags, which developed after branches of trees fell on electricity wires at some places. Power supply was also disrupted in several other areas, including Sector 17, 19, 22, 23, 24 and 25. Many villages were also affected.

Rakesh Kumar, a resident of Dadu Majra, said power supply was disrupted in the area for seven hours. Another resident of Sector 27 said they faced power outage after rain for four hours in the afternoon. An official of the Electricity Department said they received over 50 complaints at various centres.
