To commemorate the Martyrdom Day of Sher-e-Punjab Lala Lajpat Rai, Prof Ramakant Angiras inaugurated an exhibition on Lala Lajpat Rai’s memorabilia, books written by him, books written on him and a host of rare books and other material here today.

Books on freedom struggle, publications on the Gadhar movement, court proceedings of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh, a few issues of ‘The People,’ a newspaper started by Lalaji, and some copies of The Tribune from 1922 onwards are on display.

Clothes worn by Lalaji when he was subjected to a lathi charge are also on display at the exhibition.

The exhibition will remain open to public till November 23.

“It is a rare opportunity for people of Chandigarh to get a peek into the freedom struggle of India,” said an organiser.

Prof Angiras recalled the sacrifices made by Lalaji, who laid down his life for country’s freedom.

He added: “We are yet to understand the true meaning of freedom. Lalaji, who understood the importance of freedom of information and knowledge and the significance of independent thought, was among intellectuals of the time.”

Onkar Chand, Chairman, Servants of the People Society, Chandigarh branch, said Lalaji was an idol cause of his intellect, moral conviction and activism.
