UT proposes uniform speed limit in tricity

To discuss issue with coordination committee tomorrow

The Chandigarh Administration has proposed uniform speed limit for vehicles in the tricity. The proposal has been mooted to prevent accidents.

Sources say the proposal will be placed before the chief secretaries of Haryana and Punjab in a meeting of the tricity coordination committee to be held on Wednesday.

The meeting will be held under the chairmanship of UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore. Besides this, the issues of law and order, policy on government houses, e-beat system in the tricity and traffic chaos will be discussed. The committee will take decision on these issues.

Sources said that due to the difference in speed limits, drivers from neighboring cities enter the UT on a high speed, causing accidents.

Meanwhile, the Administration has issued a notification to restrict the entry of heavy vehicles during peak hours on four roads from February 1. The restriction will be imposed in the morning from 8.30 am to 10.30 am and evening from 5 pm to 8 pm from Zirakpur to the Tribune Chowk and from Transport light point, Sector 26, to the Tribune Chowk .The restriction will decongest the Tribune roundabout during the peak hours .The same restriction will also be applicable from the Transport light point to Fun Republic light point

According to the notification, emergency services buses, fire services vehicles and government vehicles engaged in services will be exempted from the restriction.

The SSP, SDMs and DSP (Traffic) will have the authority to accord permission to ply any vehicles during the restriction hours in case of an emergency.
