Varun Khanna, a paralegal volunteer under the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), has complained to Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kamaldeep Singh Sangha regarding “poor condition” of the elementary school in Alkare village of Majitha block.

The social activist mentioned that there was no proper electricity connection at the school. “Villagers are forced to send their children to far-off schools located at a distance of around two or three km. Toilets remain non-functional amid absence of water supply. Children are being subjected to unclean and unhygienic environment contrary to the provision of the RTE Act and Tandrust Punjab mission,” he stated.

Varun, who is also the president of the Amritsar Parents’ Welfare Association, said, “Such things are a hindrance in providing quality education to children. Even the ground is poorly maintained. Congress grass and unwanted vegetation can be found everywhere.”

When contacted, Deputy Commissioner Kamaldeep Singh Sangha said, “I had a word with power officials. There is no transformer in the village, but it has been assured that the issue will be taken care of. Other issues will also be addressed.”
