Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said his government had no plans of imposing a complete lockdown in the national capital---a development that comes a day after cases crossed 20,000 in a surge fuelled primarily by the highly transmissible Omicron variant.
Kejriwal said at a press briefing that he expected Covid-19 to touch 22,000 on Sunday. He said his government was monitoring the fast-changing situation closely in coordination with the Centre, and asked people not to panic but exercise great caution.
“Rising Covid-19 cases is a matter of concern but there is no need to panic. Very few people are getting hospitalised. Wearing a mask is very important. There will be no lockdown if you continue to wear masks. There is no plan to impose lockdown as of now,” Kejriwal said in a virtual press conference. “Our attempt is to impose minimum restrictions so livelihoods are not affected.”
Kejriwal’s statements came a day after Covid-19 cases in the national capital crossed 20,000, fuelled primarily by the highly-transmissible Omicron variant. The surge has come within a short time, prompting expects to project a much quicker peak.
