44,000 visit kisan mela in CCSHAU

Hisar: As many as 44,000 farmers from Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh visited the two-day kisan mela organised in the Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agriculture University (CCSHAU). Hisar MP Brijendra Singh inaugurated the mela on September 11.

Hisar MP Brijendra Singh inaugurated the mela on September 11. The MP urged university scientists to focus on crop diversification and on finding new irrigation techniques to conserve water. He said the ground water level had depleted significantly in 19 out of 22 districts. While 78 out of 128 blocks had been declared as dark zones as far as groundwater availability was concerned. The MP stated that around 85 to 90 per cent of available water was being utilised for irrigation purposes. Thus, there was a need to introduce the farmers to alternative ways of irrigation such as sprinkler system and drop irrigation system. The regional project director of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Rajbir Singh Barar, visited the mela on the concluding day. The vice chancellor, Prof KP Singh, said the farmers purchased seed worth Rs 63.83 lakh for different crops besides availing various other services available in the agriculture fair.

Drive against plastic use 

Hisar: The home science department of the Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agriculture University (CCSHAU) launched a campaign against usage of plastic in Dahima village here. The students of the department organised nukkad natak (street play) to spread awareness about ill effects of the use of plastic on environment and human health. Dean of the department Dr Bimla Dhanda said the students in partnership with the village sarpanch, panchayat members and anangwadi workers reached out to the villagers via lectures and poser display to stop usage of single-use plastic. Prof Kiran Singh said they provided 50 plants to the villagers for plantation in the village. 

Free travel for girls 

Jhajjar: Girl students at Badli town here won’t have to face problems in reaching Government College, Badli, for studies as Smartha - a social outfit has launched free service of battery-operated three-wheelers for them. The service was inaugurated by Agriculture and Panchayat Minister Om Prakash Dhankar on Friday by showing a green flag. He also assured the girls of providing roadways services after the Assembly polls. Two such vehicles will ply daily to facilitate travel for the girls. Significantly, driver of such vehicles would also be women. Notably, the college is located 2 km away from the Badli town and the girls face inconvenience on reaching there due to non-availability of public transportation.

Hisar man runners-up in ITF senior tourney

Hisar: Hisar’s tennis player Yogesh Kohli was the runners-up in the senior world ranking ITF tennis tournament held in Raipur town of Chhattisgarh from September 9 to 14. Yogesh along with his partner Nelson from Sri Lanka reached the final with four successive wins in the tournament. In the finals, the pair was up against Nitin Kirtane and his partner, where they lost the match. Yogesh said Haryana had a bright future in the sport as the Jhajjar lad Sumit Naggal, who played against Roger Federer in the first round of the US Open had won the first set before losing the match. 

New way to promote Indian culture

Mahendragarh: The Central University of Haryana (CUH) authority is promoting Indian Culture and encouraging people to protect environment by presenting its guests a coconut and a plant as a gesture of respect instead of other mementos made of metal and hard wood. “Coconut is used at every auspicious occasion in Indian Culture, hence, we present it to our guests in every programme. Educationists from foreign nations visit our university throughout the year and they do not forget to enquire about the objective behind presenting coconut to them. Then, we explain them about our custom,” said Vice-Chancellor Prof RC Kuhad. He added similarly, plant in a pot with the university logo on it was also gifted to the guests along with the coconut to spread the message of “sow plants, save environment”.

Lok Adalats resolve 4,686 cases

Faridabad/Sonepat: As many as 3,850 cases have been resolved by the National Lok Adalat held on Saturday in Faridabad and Palwal districts. While a compensation of over Rs 2.54 crore was given to litigants of various cases in Faridabad, the Lok Adalat in Palwal district resolved a total of 1,415 cases. Though the total number of cases taken up in Faridabad was 4,026, 12 Benches set up by the District Legal Services Authority were able to resolve about 2,435 cases in a day. The cases resolved were related to various issues, which included power supply disputes, cheque bounce, bank recovery, motor vehicle challan, labour court, matrimonial disputes, revenue and motor accident claims. The maximum amount of compensation was sanctioned to the 98 cases of cheque bounce in which an amount of over Rs 1.87 crore was announced. In Sonepat district, 836 cases involving payment of around Rs 3.84 crore were settled in a Rashtriya Lok Adalat organised by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) at Sonepat, Gohana, Gannaur and Kharkhauda judicial complexes in the district on Saturday. Tayyab Hussain,  Chief Judicial Magistrate-cum-Secretary, DLSA, said that the total cases included 400 of electricity bills, 106 of Motor Vehicle Act, 69 of bank loans, 74 of  cheque bounce, 57 of revenue  nature, 13 of motor vehicle accidents and nine of criminal nature.   He said that 13 cases of vehicle accidents were settled for Rs 92.32 lakh; 69 cases of bank loans for Rs 1.40 crore, and 74 cases of cheque bounce for Rs 1.48 crore. The District and Sessions Judge-cum-Chairman of DLSA, Yashveer Singh Rathore, presided over the Lok Adalat.
