The University of Health Sciences (UHS) here has suspended three heads of departments (HoDs) at the Rohtak PGIMS on the basis of a report by an inspection team of the National Human Rights Commission last year.

Prof RK Karwasra, Head of the Department of Surgery; Prof RC Siwach, Head of the Department of Orthopaedics, and Dr Amit Mann, Head of the Department of Nephrology, have been suspended with immediate effect.

Vice-Chancellor Dr OP Kalra said the NHRC team  interacted with patients, some of whom complained that certain doctors with private practice were allegedly taking money from them for surgery and other treatment.

“The NHRC team documented the complaints and submitted a report to the Chief Secretary. The report was sent to us for action. In the meantime, more such complaints were received. Hence, we decided to place the services of the doctors under suspension,” he explained.

The VC said a Vigilance probe was held into charges of irregularities against Prof Siwach during his tenure as Director, Khanpur Medical College. The other two doctors, he said, had been suspended pending an inquiry.

Meanwhile, Dr Amit Mann said he had been placed under suspension on the same charges before. He had moved the court and obtained a stay order, following which he was reinstated. “Hence, the move to suspend me amounts to contempt of court. I will move the High Court and sue the UHS for contempt, defamation and harassment,” he said, alleging members of a particular caste were being deliberately targeted.
