Shimla, April 20

Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Rajiv Saizal and Jal Shakti Minister Mahender Singh Thakur flagged off “Jeevan Dhara Mobile Medical Unit” equipped with water testing kit here today.

“The state government has decided to provide water-testing facility in the mobile medical unit for the prevention of water-borne diseases,” said the Jal Shakti Minister.

He further said as per the guidelines of the Jal Jeevan Mission, the work of sample testing from drinking water sources and distribution system was being done on priority basis to ensure quality water for people.

“A strong infrastructure of laboratories is being prepared in the state. So far, 60 laboratories have been set up, of which seven have been set up this year. A total of 50 laboratories have been accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) on the basis of high standards,” he said.

Dr Saizal said the mobile vans were functioning as primary health centres in remote areas of the state. The Jal Shakti Department and National Health Mission started the joint effort to pay special attention to water quality in five districts — Shimla, Solan, Mandi, Chamba and Kangra — where incidents of water-borne diseases have been reported in the past. —
