Sanitation workers end 4-day strike

JALANDHAR: Following an assurance from the Local Bodies Minister regarding the recruitment of new safai karamcharis in the Municipal Corporation as per need, the agitating staff ended their strike on Friday.

Following an assurance from the Local Bodies Minister regarding the recruitment of new safai karamcharis in the Municipal Corporation as per need, the agitating staff ended their strike on Friday. They also announced to start lifting waste from Saturday at 10 am onwards.

They had been observing the strike for the past four days. Close to 2,000 tonnes of waste remains to be lifted in the city.

A meeting of safai karamcharis was arranged by the local Congress leaders with Navjot Singh Sidhu in Chandigarh this evening.

The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary Local Bodies A Venu Prasad, Jalandhar MP Chaudhary Santokh Singh, Mayor Jagdish Raja, MLAs Pargat Singh and Rajinder Beri and leaders of safai karamcharis’ union, including Chandan Grewal, Ashok Bheel and Bantu Sabharwal.

The Congress MP said the minister told the staff that there was no bar on the appointment of more workers.

It is learnt that the Local Bodies Minister told the safai karamcharis that the new recruitments would be made as per the increasing need.
