The Jammu and Kashmir Police have closed the investigation into the 1990 Gawkadal massacre case, saying that despite strenuous efforts, no clue to trace the perpetrators was found.
The police in their reply to the State Human Rights Commission filed on Thursday also said the records pertaining to the incident were lost in the 2014 floods.
The reply was submitted to the State Human Rights Commission by the Senior Superintendent of Police, Srinagar, on Thursday after he was directed by the rights panel chairman to submit the status report as the police had delayed the investigation into the January 21, 1990, Gawkadal massacre.
The petition was filed by rights activist Muhammad Ahsan Untoo in July 2012.
The SSP in his report said “strenuous efforts” were made to trace the culprits but “no clue was found”.
“Finally, the investigation into the case was closed as untraced,” the reply reads.
