Ludhiana, December 14

A city-based RTI activist has complained to Chief Minister Amarinder Singh regarding an alleged encroachment on government land at Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar Market.

The complainant, Kuldeep Singh Khaira, has alleged that the cost of alleged encroached land is Rs 3-4 crore. A three-storeyed building that looks similar to the adjoining shop-cum-offices has been constructed on the said land, he has stated in his complaint.

“As per the site plan, there are 10 SCFs at the market. Now, one more SCF has come up on a vacant piece of land in the market. The construction of this building has been taking place in intervals for the past two years. Three storeys have been constructed so far. However, no MC official has taken any action to stop this major violation,” he alleges.

Khaira has urged the Chief Minister, the Local Government Minister, the Chief Director of Vigilance Bureau, the MC Commissioner and the DSP, MC police, to enquire into the matter and take concrete action against the official concerned who allegedly allowed the illegal construction on the piece of government land.

It was learnt that the scheme was earlier under the Ludhiana Improvement Trust. Later, the market scheme was transferred to the Municipal Corporation. Sources said the piece of land had been lying vacant for a long time. Several other people have also complained about illegal constructions at the markets developed by the Trust.

Despite repeated attempts, MC Joint Commissioner Kulpreet Singh could not be contacted for his comment.
