Ludhiana, February 15
City judokas Jatin Kumar and Gini brought laurels to the city by securing medals at the All India Inter-University Judo Championship for Men and Women, held recently on the Guru Nanak Dev University campus in Amritsar.
Jatin Kumar and Gini, both trainees of senior coach Parveen Thakur at Ludhiana Coaching Centre being run by the Punjab Sports Department here at the multipurpose indoor hall, annexed a silver and a bronze medal, respectively.
Jatin, a Bachelor of Physical Education student at Lovely Professional University, Phagwara, competed in the Under-66kg weight category in the championship and clinched the silver medal.
Jatin had bagged a bronze medal in the Khelo India University Games in Lucknow last year. Jatin had earlier finished among the top seven judokas in the U-60kg weight group during the Junior Asian Judo Championship held in Kerala in 2016.
Jatin was honoured by the Punjab Government at the state-level Republic Day function last month. At the R-day function, held at at Punjab Agricultural University, he was felicitated by Punjab Principal Secretary Anurag Verma on behalf of the Chief Minister.
Gini, a BA final year student at Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, won a bronze at the All India Inter-Varsity Championship in Amritsar in the U-78kg weight category. She also participated in the 2022 Khelo India University Games held in Bengaluru.
Gini is gold medallist in the U-63kg weight category at the National School Games, which were held in Delhi in 2019.
Both judokas have been selected to compete in the upcoming 4th Khelo India University Games, scheduled to be held in Guwahati from February 25 to 28.
District Sports Officer Rupinder Singh Brar congratulated the athletes and coach Parveen Thakur.
