Ludhiana, November 15

Upset over not regularising jobs of contractual sanitation workers, members of the Municipal Karamchari Dal staged a protest and burnt the effigy of Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi near ‘Ghanta Ghar’ Chowk on Monday.

Bias against MC workers, says Dal chief

Chairman of the Municipal Karamchari Dal Vijay Danav said while the Charanjit Singh Channi-led state government is regularising services of contractual workers of all other departments but Municipal Corporation workers, including sewer men, safai karamcharis and four other rank employees, are being given a step-motherly treatment.

They blocked the traffic during the protest to express their anger against the Congress government in the state.

The protest was joined by SAD leaders, including party’s Ludhiana president Harbhajan Singh Dang and youth leader Gurdeep Singh Gosha.

Chairman of the association Vijay Danav said while the Charanjit Singh Channi-led state government is regularising services of contractual workers of all other departments but Municipal Corporation workers, including sewer men, safai karamcharis and four other rank employees, are being given a step-motherly treatment.

He said they would intensify the agitation against the Congress government. If required, gates of the MC office would be shut down on Tuesday if the voice of the employees was not heard.

Chaudhary Yashpal, president of the association, said when Capt Amarinder Singh was the Chief Minister and Charanjit Singh Channi himself was the Cabinet Minister, the latter had supported the strike of the contractual municipal workers but now that Channi himself was the Chief Minister, he did not regularise the jobs of the contractual sanitation workers.
